Qantas Airways Ltd.’s premium lounge at Hong Kong airport has finally reopened after being closed for three years. This is a promising sign that the city is gradually returning as an international travel hub following the pandemic.
The reopening is part of a massive A$100 million ($67 million) investment by Qantas into its global lounge network. The Hong Kong site has been spruced up with new furniture and fresh colors, and the menu now features delicious local dishes.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, flights in and out of Hong Kong have been slow, causing many airlines to abandon the city. However, Qantas has seen strong demand for flights to Hong Kong since they resumed in January, according to Chief Customer Officer Markus Svensson.
For now, the Australian carrier operates daily return flights between Sydney and Hong Kong. The Melbourne-Hong Kong route will be reinstated in June, starting from three days a week, before increasing to four weekly services from mid-July.
In other exciting news, Qantas announced on Tuesday that Vanessa Hudson will become its first female chief executive officer, replacing Alan Joyce, who has led the airline for 15 years, from November.
