Canada issues travel advisory for its citizens traveling to the POK’s Gilgit-Baltistan region

The Canadian Government has warned citizens against traveling to the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK), where massive protests have erupted following Pakistani security forces’ arrest of a Shia religious leader.

In a revised travel advisory issued on Thursday, the Canadian Government warned: “Avoid all travel to the Pakistan-administered region due to violent protests.”

Furthermore, the advisory added, “Large protests began on August 31, 2023, in Skardu, Gilgit-Baltistan, after a local religious leader was arrested under Pakistan’s blasphemy laws. Clashes between protesters and security forces have occurred. The demonstrations have led to traffic and public transport disruptions.”

In addition, it advised travelers to “exercise a high degree of caution” in the country due to threats of kidnapping, terrorism, civil unrest, and violence. “There is a threat of terrorism in Pakistan. The security situation is fragile and unpredictable. Several terrorist groups are present and operate across the country,” the advisory also added.

Canada also advised its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Karachi. It warned that protests continue to erupt in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Lahore following the recent arrest of former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan.

Mentioning the prevalence of gender-based violence and honor killings, the Canadian Government urged women to remain vigilant because “those traveling alone may be subject to some forms of harassment and verbal abuse.”

Due to “serious security concerns,” it will likely be unable to provide consular assistance to Canadians, the Government in Ottawa stated. The advisory also mentioned a list of the guidelines one must adhere to while residing in the crisis-experiencing nation.

“Avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place. Always be aware of your surroundings when in public places. Carry photo identification at all times. Expect an increased presence of security forces. Be prepared to change your travel plans on short notice. Monitor local media to stay informed on the evolving situation. Follow the instructions of local authorities,” it concluded.
